Scott M. Solkoff is a Florida Bar Board Certified Specialist in Elder Law. He operates Solkoff Legal, P.A. a law firm that exclusively represents the elderly, those with special needs and their caregivers.

Qualifications

Author of the leading textbook for lawyers on Florida Elder Law (originally written by his father, Jerome Ira Solkoff), Scott Solkoff is Florida Bar Board Certified in Elder Law, Past-Chair of The Florida Bar’s Elder Law Section, a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estates Counsel, Past-President of the state chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and served on the national Board of Directors. Scott focuses on comprehensive planning for all people who want to grow older! Scott develops master plans and documents which take care of what happens with assets after death but also what happens during lifetime. Since 1995, Scott has helped thousands of people legally protect their assets against the cost of long-term care by converting countable assets to non-countable assets to qualify for Medicaid and/or VA benefits. This often saves hundreds of thousands of dollars so that a family benefits from savings instead of being penalized for it. This allows for more and better care. Scott also handles estate planning, guardianships for incapacitated Floridians, health care planning, probate, trust administration and litigation involving wills, trusts and exploitation of the elderly and people with disabilities. Scott’s father was one of the founders of The Florida Bar’s Elder Law Section, a charter member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and one of the most prominent teachers of Elder Law. Scott therefore had a great mentor and guide through his father’s death in 2016. Prior to Jerome’s death, Scott founded the Elder Law College with Bob Henderson and Jan Friedlund in dedication to his father’s lessons of teaching other lawyers.

Recognitions

Most recently, Scott was the recipient of the John J. Regan Writing Award for his article, “Report on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act: Its Impact on the Special Needs and Elder Law Practice,” published in the Spring 2015 NAELA Journal.

Scott is the co-author, with his father, of one of the leading books on Elder Law (Thomson West publishers), now in its 16th edition, which has helped define modern elder law practices and establish Solkoff Legal, P.A. as the leading name in elder and disability law issues.

Nationally recognized as a leading expert in the field of elder and disability law, Scott is a frequent speaker and has given presentations on elder law issues across the United States and Canada. Scott has been quoted in numerous major publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Kiplinger’s Magazine, The Washington Post and others.

Giving Back to the Community

Scott is committed to advance the well-being and betterment of elderly people and their caregivers. He supports his local community and lends his expertise to a number of non-profit organizations that aim to help elderly people and individuals living with disabilities. He is currently on the Board of Directors for the JCC of the Greater Palm Beaches and is a former Board Member and supporter of Alpert Jewish Family Services in

Palm Beach County and the Northeast Alzheimer’s Day Care Center. Scott is also the recipient of the Florida Bar’s 1998 Charlotte Brayer Public Service Award, recognizing his substantial aid to the elderly. He was appointed by Florida’s Governor and Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives to serve on the 18-member Purple Ribbon Task Force, charged with developing a state plan and report on Alzheimer’s disease and related types of dementias.

Scott also educates other attorneys throughout the country in elder law matters and has brought together the nation’s most comprehensive elder law training resources in Elder Law College. He is one of the most called upon experts for seminars on disabilities and elder law. His seminars are considered leading in the field and are distributed by various bar associations on audio and video for educational purposes.
Scott has been living in South Florida since 1972 and enjoys life with his children, Jacob and Lola.
